DEPARTMENT IN FOCUS KANAB FIRE DEPARTMENT
Responding to an auto accident between Kanab and Lake Powell.
Kanab Fire Department was created in May of 1949. Over the past 72 years, we have evolved into an all-hazards department. In addition
to fighting fires, we also perform extrication, hazmat, business inspections, pre-planning of buildings, and fire code enforcement.
Kanab Fire Department has two fire stations within Kanab’s city limits, the Main Station and Ranchos Station.
As a department, we meet every Thursday for training and business. We train to be the most professional department we can be. We currently have an ISO rating of 3/3X, which we owe to constant hard work and dedication of our fire department staff and the great working relationship with the other city departments.
Currently Kanab Fire Department has 23 people on staff, and they are as follows:
• chief (full time)
• deputy chief (full time)
• wildland captain (full time) • 5 captains (volunteer)
• 2 engineers (volunteer)
• 15 firefighters (volunteer)
• 3 wildland summer seasonal positions
The Kanab Fire Department is in a growth stage, particularly in terms of staffing. In 2018 we hired our deputy chief full time. That same year, we took on a massive renovation of Sta- tion #1 to add additional apparatus space and living quarters as well as a large conference room and offices. This year, in 2021, we added our wildland captain to the full-time roster. In addition, the department is currently
seeking to hire a full-time wildland engine boss / firefighter to add to our staff as well.
As is the case with many volunteer depart- ments, our number of volunteers will fre- quently fluctuate. We are seeking to add vol- unteer members to our ranks as well, and we have a recruitment video that can be seen on our Kanab Fire Department Facebook page.
Our apparatus is as follows:
• 2 Type 1 structure engines
• 1 ladder
• 1 Type 3-1 engine (dual certification,
and new as of June 2020) • 2 Type 6 brush trucks
• 2 water tenders
One of the challenges Kanab Fire Department is facing is the rapid population growth in our
